William Burke

William Burke 1792-1829

Born in Urney, County Tyrone. He went to Scotland where he lived with William Hare and his wife. He was the other half of the infamous duo who provided corpses for the medical schools in Edinburgh by murdering their tenants – 15 in all before they were caught. Hare turned king’s evidence and Burke was hanged in Edinburgh and his body was given to medical science. His skeleton ended up in the Edinburgh University Museum, Scotland.
