William Brown 1777-1857

Born in Foxford, County Mayo. Father of the Argentine Navy. He broke the power of the Spanish fleet at Montevideo in 1814. Retired from the sea in 1919 but went back again in 1826 to fight Brazil. He took command of the navy and broke the blockade of Buenos Aires where he was badly wounded. He is widely respected in Argentine where streets, towns and provinces are named after him. Argentina commemorated the bicentary of his birth with the issue of special coins and stamps. He died in Boca, and is buried in the Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Photos by Pat Ruane
