Robert O’Hara Burke 1820-1861

Born St Cleran, Galway. He was a soldier and policeman before he went to Australia, where he continued his career in the police service. He was very popular and despite his lack of experience he was chosen to lead an expedition to cross the continent from south to north. His inexperience and impatience led to mistakes which led to the deaths of himself and his colleagues at Coopers Creek. He was buried in Melbourne. Photos by John Wright
