Robert O’Hara Burke 1820-1861
Born St Cleran, Galway. He was a soldier and
policeman before he went to Australia, where he continued his career in the
police service. He was very popular and despite his lack of experience he was
chosen to lead an expedition to cross the continent from south to north. His
inexperience and impatience led to mistakes which led to the deaths of himself
and his colleagues at Coopers Creek. He was buried in Melbourne. Photos by
