Mary Mallon,  died 1938

Born in Cookstown, County Tyrone. She was known as Typhoid Mary. An unwitting carrier of the typhoid virus, she was a cook who was responsible for infecting a number of people, some of whom died. She was put in custody but was eventually let out provided she stayed away from food preparation. She did for a while but went back and more people became ill and one died. This time she was put away for over twenty years until her death. She wasnít the only person who was an unwitting carrier, or who contravened requirements to stay away from food preparation but she was the only one to be treated so harshly. She was buried by the Department of Health in St Raymondís Cemetery, in the Bronx.
