Margaret Aylward 1810-1889

Born in Waterford. She came from a wealthy family and after her education she went to work with the poor. She tried twice to become a nun but eventually she went to work with the Ladies Association of the St Vincent de Paul. She was a very independent woman who was not afraid to confront her own church as well as Protestant proselytizing groups and she even went to prison for six months for allegedly kidnapping a child. After prison she founded the Sisters of the Holy faith in 1868. She also founded St Brigids orphanage. She is buried in Dublin.
