Ladies of Llangollen

Lady Eleanor Butler 1745-1829 and Sara Ponsonby 1755-1831

The two ladies came from Ireland and lived in a cottage in Llangollen with their maidservant Mary Carryll. It is said they lived here for 50 years without once leaving the house. They became famous and many people went to see them. They were once referred to as the two most celebrated virgins in Europe. All three are buried in the churchyard in Llangollen, Clwyd, Wales.
