Joseph Carey 1859-1937

Born in Kilwarlin, County Down. He was a landscape painter and a member of the Ulster Academy of Arts. His best known work is a series of historical paintings in the Ulster Hall. According to Rudnitzky - The Careys he was also an accomplished chess player and beat the then world champion, Capablanca, in a simultaneous match in Belfast around 1922. Whatever Rudnitzky was told, Capablanca, who wasn't world champion at that time, came to Belfast in 1919 and won all his simultaneous games with the exception of one draw. Carey played a queens pawn game against him and lost. Carey is buried in Belfast.
