Derek Hill 1916-2000

Artist born in Southampton. He came to Ireland in 1949 and a year later bought St. Columbs on the shores of Lough Gartan in Donegal. He first went to Tory Island in 1956 and not long after the Tory Island school of painting began. In 1981 he gave his house and contents to the State. He was given honorary citizenship in 1999. He was both a landscapist and a portraitist. He died in London after being in poor health for some months. His ashes were brought to Ireland and after a memorial service in the local Church of Ireland, they were scattered by his cousin, Pamela O’Mahoney, on the lawns of his former home.
