The hanghouse plaque: The panel on the right reads: Ten young patriots, whose names are given below/ were executed in this building at Mountjoy Prison, in/ the course of the War of Independence./ The youngest of them and the first to die was eighteen year old Kevin Barry./ Here too executions of convicted prisoners took place between 1901-1954./ We remember with respect all who died here and celebrate the social progress in Ireland which has consigned the gallows to history./ The names of the Mountjoy Ten are then recorded.
The panel on the right reads the same but in Irish. The panel in the middle reads: In Mountjoy jail one Monday morning/ High upon the Gallow's Tree/ Kevin Barry gave his young life/ In the cause of liberty/ Unveiled by the Minister for Justice/ Equality and Law Reform/ John O'Donoghue T.D./ November 1st 2000/ Irish Prison Service |
