Grace O’Malley 1530-1603

Born in County Mayo. Sea-queen of the west of Ireland. She attacked ships and levied tolls. Sir Henry Sidney called her a notorious woman in all the coasts of Ireland. Sir Richard Bingham considered her a notable traitress and nurse of all rebellions in the province for forty years. She sailed up the Thames in 1593 to meet with Queen Elizabeth.

Tradition suggests she was buried in the O’Malley tomb in the Carmelite Friary on Clare Island.
