Edmund Ignatius Rice 1762-1844

Born at Westcourt, near Callan, County Kilkenny. Founder of the Irish Christian Brothers. He started a school for poor boys in Waterford in 1802 and he attracted followers and opened more schools. In 1920, Pope Pius Vll formally approved The Bothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland. He was originally interred in a mausoleum at Mount Sion, Waterford but his coffin is now in the memorial chapel.
