Cornelius MacLoughlin

He was a United Irishman in his early days. R.R. Madden in his United Irishmen (vol 2 page 50) mentions a dramatic incident in MacLoughlins’s house. He published a manuscript by Arthur O’Connor which he obtained while passing Kilmainham Gaol when O’Connor threw it out the window asking him to publish. MacLoughlin replied he would do so if he thought it had merit. MacLoughlin was brought before the select committee of the Irish House of Commons and when asked why he published the document he replied that he approved of the contents. No punishment was inflicted. MacLoughlin contributed generously to O.Connell’s expenses. He is buried in Dublin.
