Born Robert Noonan into a middle-class family in Dublin. He emigrated to South Africa but after his wife died he sailed to England where he worked as a house painter and sign writer in Hastings. He wrote The Ragged tressell2.jpg (42715 bytes)Trousered


 Philanthropists in his spare time. The book reflects the conditions and attitudes he experienced but he couldn’t find a publisher. On his way to Canada in 1911, he took ill in Liverpool and died in a workhouse there. The book was eventually published in an abridged version in 1914, and in full in 1955.

       His life is shrouded in mystery and much would have remained uncovered had it not been for the work of F.C. Ball who carried out extensive research into his life and death. He is buried in Liverpool. Photo by Julia Taylor
