Rudolf Eric Raspe 1737-1794

Raspe.jpg (42028 bytes)

He came originally from one of the German states where he was a professor of archaeology and Keeper of the National Library.

Unfortunately some of the items in his trust went missing and he went missing too. After a spell in England where he published a book on mineralogy, he went to Scotland and again had to leave under a cloud. He came to Ireland to manage the copper mines on the Herbert Estate in Killarney. However he is best known and remembered for being the author and the compiler of the Baron Munchausen tales - Baron Munchausenís Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. Raspe died from typhoid. He is buried in Killarney, County Kerry.

Further information, location and directions to the grave are to be found in "The End - An Illustrated Guide to the Graves of Irish Writers".  Click here to order a copy of this book
