Frank Ryan 1902-1944

Born near Elton, County Limerick. He fought against the Treaty and later became editor of An Phoblacht. He was a founder member of Saor Éire. In 1936 he brought together a group of over two-hundred Irishmen who fought in The International Brigade in Spain. He was wounded, returned to Ireland but went back again to Spain and was captured. He was sentenced to death but eventually was sent to Germany. He teamed up with Seán Russell but the latter died when they were both on the way to Ireland in a German submarine. Ryan returned to Germany, fell ill and died in Dresden. He is buried in Dublin.
