osullivan m.jpg (31160 bytes)

Born on the Blasket Islands. He was sent to an orphanage on the mainland after his mother died when he was just one year old. When he came back to the island after six years he had little Irish. The English academic George Thomson encouraged him to write. He wrote one book of note - Twenty Years A-Growing. He became a garda but left in 1934 to take up writing full-time. Unfortunately he was unable to repeat the success of his first book and he rejoined the Gardaí again shortly before his death. He drowned at Salthill in 1950. He is buried in County Galway.

Further information, location and directions to the grave are to be found in "The End - An Illustrated Guide to the Graves of Irish Writers".  Click here to order a copy of this book
