Cathal O’Byrne 1876-1957

He was born in County Down. As his gravestone states, he was a fine singer and he performed throughout Ireland and Britain. He is perhaps best known for his book As I Roved Out. The book is a collection of stories about the streets and backlanes of Belfast and its people. The book was immensely popular when it was first published in 1946 and it is still in print. Other works include: Ashes on the Hearth, Pilgrim in Italy and books of poems and short stories. He is buried in Belfast.
