Michael Joseph Molloy 1914-1994

Born in Milltown, County Galway. His birthdate is usually given as 1917 but his brother puts the birth date as 1914.  He entered a seminary but a serious illness forced him to leave and he returned home to work on a farm. His first play The Old Road was produced in the Abbey in 1943. Other plays include The Wood of the Whispering, The Visiting House and his most famous play The King of Friday’s Men. The death notice for M. J. (Joe) Molloy referred to him as “Playwright and Folklorist”. He is buried in County Galway.
