Maud Gonne MacBride 1865-1953

Born near Aldershot, England. She fought against injustice and for Irelandís independence.

           She inspired W.B.Yeats but turned down his offer of marriage. She eventually married John MacBride although the marriage lasted only a couple of years. Their son was SeŠn MacBride. She was interned in 1918 and was again in prison in 1923. She did not support the Treaty and devoted herself to the welfare of prisonerís families. She wrote articles on feminism, politics and social affairs as well as a memoir of her activities until 1903 Ė A Servant of the Queen. She is buried with her son SeŠn in Dublin.
