Born in Walpole Massachusetts. She went to school in Dublin and attended University College Dublin. Her first collection of short stories, Tales from Bective Bridge, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Other collections followed and established her as one of the finest lavin2.jpg (40020 bytes)of short story writers. Her works include Tales From Bective Bridge, A Likely Story, Collected Stories, A Memory and Other Stories, Happiness, A Family Likeness, A Single Lady and the novels The House in Clewe Street and Mary O’Grady. She is buried in County Meath.
