Patrick Kavanagh 1904-1967

Born near Inniskeen, County Monaghan. In 1936 his first collection of poems was published Ploughman and Other Poems. This was followed by The Green Fool. He went to Dublin in 1939 and eked out a living as a journalist and writer. The Great Hunger was published in 1942, another collection of poems in A Soul for Sale and a novel Tarry Flynn. He survived cancer in 1955 and some of the best poems after this period were collected in Come Dance with Kitty Stobling. His Collected Poems published in 1964 established him as a major poet.  He is buried in Inniskeen.
