John Hewitt 1907-1987

Born in Belfast. He was Keeper of Art at the Ulster Museum from 1930-1957 and Director of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry from 1957-1972. He was writer-in-residence at the New University of Ulster 1973-6 and then for three further years at Queens University Belfast. He wrote 14 volumes of poetry as well as criticisms and various books on art. His works include No Rebel Word, Collected Poems 1932-1967, Out of My Time, Time Enough and he edited Rhyming Weavers and Other Country Poets of Antrim and Down. He donated his body to medical science. A stone cairn was erected to his memory in 1989 in County Antrim.
