Sir John Gray 1815-1875

Born in Claremorris, Co Mayo. He took a lead role in helping to bring about the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland. He is best known however for the Vartry water scheme which provided Dublin with a clean pure supply. The monument over his grave and the statue to him in O’Connell St. are by Thomas Farrell. He is buried in Dublin.
