Arthur Griffith 1871-1922

Born in Dublin. He was a journalist who founded the paper the United Irishman. His ideas brought Sinn Féin into being and he became President of the movement in 1911. He did not fight in the Easter Rising but was imprisoned several times subsequently. Following his ideas the Sinn Féiners set up a separate parliament in 1919.  He led the delegation which negotiated the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921. He was elected President of the Dáil and the Irish Republic in 1922 but died shortly afterwards. His works include The Resurrection of Hungary and Ballad History of Ireland. He is buried in  Dublin.
