Born in Limerick. He went to London to become a full-time dramatist but he had more success as a short story writer and novelist. The Collegians is based upon the Colleen Bawn story. Other works include Holland-Tide, Talis Qualis and Tales of the Munster Festivals. He became a Christian Brother shortly before his death and burned his manuscripts. He is buried in Cork.
