Francis Grose 1731-1791

He was an antiquarian who brought out two large illustrated volumes on the antiquities of  Ireland, published in 1791.

He is buried in the same grave as his friend Gandon in Drumcondra. The inscription on the tomb reads To the memory of Capt Francis Grose FRS who whilst in chearful conversation with his friends expired in their arms without a sigh 17thMay 1791 aged 60.

Also his friend James Gandon Architect born 1742 died.

Captain Grose was a friend of Robert Burns and the inspirer of Tam O’Shanter. This stone was renovated 1950.
