Barry Fitzgerald 1888-1961

He was born William Joseph Shields in Dublin. He combined acting and the civil service until he became a full time actor at the age of forty. He had already made his name as Captain Jackie Boyle in Juno and the Paycock and as Fluther Good in the Plough and the Stars before he went to Hollywood. He acted in over forty films including The Long Voyage Home, How Green was my Valley and None but the Lonely Heart. He won an Oscar for best supporting actor to Bing Crosby in Going My Way. He is buried in Dublin.
