William Dargan

















































William Dargan 1799-1867

Born in County Carlow. He was an engineer responsible for the laying of the first rail line in Ireland and with the laying of nearly every other railway in the country subsequently. He also planned and paid for the National Gallery. After a serious fall from his horse his businesses began to suffer and he died almost bankrupt. There is a statue of him by Thomas Farrell in front of the National Gallery in Dublin. He is buried in Dublin.
