She appears to have been born in the North of Ireland, although some sources suggest London as her birthplace. At an early age, she became involved in the theatre and soon established herself as the most famous comic actress of the period. She wrote a number of plays including The Rehearsal and The Faithful Irishwoman. She was buried in Twickenham, London. As McDonagh reported in Irish Graves in England, her grave was unknown and ‘even the sexton was unable to tell whether she had been buried in the church or in the grounds.’
