James Patrick Carney 1914-1989

Born in Portlaoise, County Laois. He held various posts in the School of Celtic Studies in the Institute of Advanced Studies including that of Senior Professor. He edited Poems on the Butlers of Ormond, Cahir and Dunboyne and Poems on the O’Reillys. He published essays, translations and other works including The Problem of St Patrick and Studies in Irish Literature and History. He was honoured by his colleagues in Sages, Saints and Storytellers, Celtic Studies in Honour of James Carney (1983). He is buried in Dublin.
