Thomas Henry Burke, Died 1882

Under Secretary in Ireland, he was assassinated along with Lord Cavendish in the Phoenix Park in 1882. The monument has the following barely legible inscription on three sides in three separate lines:

TO THE MEMORY OF THOMAS HENRY BURKE UNDER SECRETARY TO THE LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND

ASSASSINATED IN THE PHOENIX PARK 6TH MAY 1882 THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY HIS MANY FRIENDS AMONG THE IRISH

RESIDENT MAGISTRATES AS A MARK OF THEIR APPRECIATION OF HIS HIGH CHARACTER AND EMINENT PUBLIC SERVICES R.I.P.

This is only a memorial however. He is buried in his fatherís grave which is directly opposite the memorial on the other side of the path. It has a Celtic cross. He is buried in Dublin.

Further information and directions to the grave are to be found in "Dead and Buried in Dublin - An Illustrated Guide to the Historic Graves of Dublin.  Click here to order a copy of this book
