Dion(ysius Lardner)
Boucicault 1820-1890

Born in Dublin. His
mother was a sister of George Darley. He spent his whole adult life around
the theatre, first as an actor then as a playwright and theatre manager.
He wrote over 150 plays, the most famous of which is The Colleen Bawn. He
also starred in many of them. Other works include:
The Octoroon, The Poor
of New York, Arrah-na-Pogue or The Wicklow Wedding, Led Astray, Forbidden
Fruit and The Shaughraun. But money troubles and women troubles led
eventually to his death in straitened circumstances. He is buried in New York. Photos by Doug Garcia
