Richard Irvine Best 1872-1959

Born in Derry. He was Director of the National Library of Ireland 1924-1940 and Senior Professor of Celtic Studies at the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies 1940-1947. His major work was the Bibliography of Irish Philology and Manuscript Literature, Publications 1913-1941. Other works include The Irish Mythological Cycle and Celtic Mythology, The Martyrology of Tallaght and he co-edited The Book of Leinster. Best appears as the librarian in the Scylla and Charybdis episode in Ulysses. He is buried in Dublin.
