Harry Boland 1887-1922

Born in Dublin. He was a key figure in re-organising the Irish Volunteers after 1916. He was secretary of Sinn Féin in 1917. He was opposed to the Treaty but was a member of the Committee which was appointed by the Dáil to find a peaceful solution to the differences between the sides. He was arrested at the Grand Hotel in Skerries and died from wounds incurred during the arrest, although he was not armed. Jack Yeats painted his funeral. Yeats said it was probably the only record there was of the event, as all cameras were confiscated at the gates of the cemetery. He is buried in Dublin.
