Dr James Barry

Dr James Barry 1789-1865

A niece of the artist of the same name, she was born Margaret Buckley in Cork. She joined the British Army’s medical corps in 1813 passing herself off as a man. She was quite successful and became a surgeon to various units early in her career before eventually being made Inspector General of Hospitals. Many suspected her but the idea was so incredible that she got away with it. The idea was not quite unique. Another Irish women Christian Davies 1667-1739 had also enlisted as a man and fought in the British army. Dr James Barry is buried in London.
