Chester Beatty

















































Alfred Chester Beatty 1875-1968

Born in New York. He was a mining engineer who made a fortune and began accumulating the finest collection of oriental art and books in private hands. He moved to Ireland in 1950 and donated his collection to the Irish nation. The Chester Beatty Library and Gallery of Oriental Art was originally located in Shrewsbury Road but is now in its new home in Dublin Castle. In recognition of his contribution Chester Beatty was made the first Honorary Irish Citizen. He is buried in Dublin.
