Brian Boru c940-1014

Born in Munster. King of Munster and later of Ireland. The Battle of Clontarf ended Viking military involvement in Ireland but the conflict itself was more an internal Irish affair. Brian was killed in his tent after the battle and his body brought to Armagh where it lay in state. The body was embalmed with great magnificence and the remains lay in state for twelve successive nights. They were then deposited in a stone coffin at the north side of the great altar of the cathedral. A granite tablet commemorating the burial is placed on the outside west wall of the north transept of the cathedral marking as closely as is possible the last known resting place of this great king.
